Minutes of July 12, 2005

 

The July meeting of the Honolulu Woodturners was brought to order by President Ed Potter at 6:00 p.m.

 

Ed asked the visitors at the meeting to introduce themselves and tell us a little about themselves. They were the Tomihama family of Eddie, DeeDee, and Nick. The other visitor was Danny Krenwinkel.

 

Ed mentioned the 2nd Annual Honolulu Woodturners Exhibit at Nohea Gallery. He explained the excellent opportunity and benefits of the show. It gives us an opportunity to get our art out into the community and at the same time help support the Aloha United Way.  Initially, the show may be a little slow but as time goes by the show will build into an anticipated and well-attended event. We would like to make a commitment to Nohea Gallery to participate as much as possible. Next year we hope to get the information out earlier. This can really turn into something that does us and Nohea Gallery proud. Participants this year included Pat Kramer, Sharon Doughtie, Ed Potter, Gordon Tang, Tom Young, Ken Nielson, Scott Sullivan, Uwe Dost, Jon Tuthill, David Chung, Andy Cole, Bill Ichinose, Mike Lee, and Craig Mason. The top turning for the keiki was well received. During the top turning demonstration, a couple of capacitors on Andy Cole's lathe burned out. The club will reimburse Andy for his costs.

 

According to an e-mail I received, the total donation from Nohea Gallery to Aloha United Way will be $1186.25. This includes $384 from the raffle ticket sales, and $392.25 from the 15 percent Nohea donates from the sales. Laurie Baron also donated a couple bowls from her inventory to a silent auction held by AUW which brought in an additional $410.

 

Dennis Feinberg, webmaster, reported the framework for the website is finished. He is asking for help in the following areas:

Sandy Rhines, treasurer, reported the club lost $216 on Trent Bosch's demonstration. We need slightly better participation as our goal is to break even on these outside demonstrators. The treasury has a balance of $3,500.62. This includes payment to Betty Scarpino for her demonstration scheduled for this fall. Betty's website is www.bettyscarpino.com

 

Sunshine Arts Gallery at 47-653 Kamehameha Highway in Kahaluu is looking for bowls. If interested, contact them at 239-2992 or stop by.

 

Ed is considering asking various gallery owners to attend a meeting where members would bring in samples of their work. This way, we would have them all in one place rather than having to transport our work to their various galleries.

 

Craig Mason, our librarian, mentioned that members are welcome to check out tapes or books from our library. Just make a note on what you checked out and return it at the next meeting. Mahalo to Stewart Chow who donated back issues of More Woodturning to the library.

 

We received an e-mail from Jim Syvertsen. He recently started importing and selling burls from Australia. If interested, his website is www.aussieburlsales.com 

 

Jon Tuthill gave a report on the availability of wood from some clearing work scheduled at Schofield Barracks. The contract is supposed to be put out this week. There are four or five various individuals or groups interested in some of them trees. The trees include narra, monkeypod, mahogany, cypress and Norfolk pine. The trees will need to be moved to someplace off Schofield Barracks and then we could cut into bowl blanks. There should be plenty of wood to go around. More information will be made available as details are worked out.

 

Available for sale at the meeting were T-shirts and caps embroidered with the club logo. They sell for $12.50 each. Contact Andy Cole at 739-1050 or andy_cole@honoluluwoodturners.org to check on availability, reserve, or purchase any of them.

 

Sandy Rhines is aware of a large, 40-inch diameter, Norfolk pine tree being taken down. Contact Sandy at sandy_rhines@honoluluwoodturners.org or 261-0041 for more information.

 

Jim Orrick gave an informative demonstration on his method of turning a confetti lamp.

 

As a follow-up to Jim's demonstration, and part of September's challenge, members willing to participate were supplied with two confetti lamps each. They were asked to turn two confetti lamps, one for themselves, and one as a donation to the club. Bring the better of the two to the September 13 meeting. The lamps will be sold and the proceeds will benefit the club's treasury.

 

There are still some confetti lamps left, so anyone who did not receive theirs, and is willing to donate one to the club, contact Craig Mason at craig_mason@honoluluwoodturners.org

David Higa brought in a several pieces of wood to share.

 

In an attempt to encourage more participation, multiple prizes are being awarded at the meeting for the challenges. Each meeting a participation prize winner will be drawn from the people who enter a piece in either of the challenges or in the instant gallery. Prizes will also be awarded to the top winners in the challenges.

 

Prizes included club cap, t-shirt, milo, koa, a $25 gift certificate, and several $15 gift certificates.

 

Gordon Tang was the lucky winner of the participation prize.

 

The July challenge was to turn either a burl or a piece of furniture.

Certificates for the past winners of the challenges were created and presented by Bill Ichinose.

 

The challenge for September will again have two categories. You are encouraged to enter both. One category is to turn a confetti lamp and the other is something turned and carved.

 

The Instant Gallery can be anything you've turned, examples of how to do something, mistakes, or pleas for help. Anything goes!

 

The September program is tentatively planned as a demonstration on bottle stopper turning.

 

The September meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 13, 6:00 p.m., at the Woodcraft warehouse.

 

The meetings are the second Tuesday of the odd months.
