Honolulu Woodturners A Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners
Minutes of March 15, 2003
The March meeting of the Honolulu Woodturners was held in conjunction with the first annual Honolulu Woodturners Family Potluck. The Potluck was held at Kalama Beach Club in Kailua, a privately owned club with a nice shady area and easy access to a great beach.
Meeting convened by President Stewart Chow.
The challenge for the March meeting was a flying saucer (Frisbee). After verifying that the entries did indeed fly, the results were: |

We were fortunate enough to have some gift certificates donated by The Woodturners Catalog to award as prizes.
Discussions were held as to whether to invite George Hatfield to give us a demonstration. George is a retired instructor from the University of Sydney. He does mostly spindle work as has a number of projects he could demonstrate. We will find out what dates he is available and if no conflict, will pursue the demonstration. Tentatively, he will be here during the early part of June.
The first part of June is also when Jack De Voss will be in the islands. He will be here from June 2nd to the 9th. Jack has offered to do a full day demonstration on Saturday, June 7. This will be at no cost to the club and will be a 'members only' event. More details on Jack's demo will follow as they become available.
If you have not paid your dues yet for this year, please send to: Dennis Fienberg, Treasurer 268 Aikahi Place Kailua, HI 96734
Treasurer's report: The club has a balance of $3,409.05. Membership fees of $5 are due for the year 2003.
The May challenge is something made entirely, or partially, of plywood.
The next meeting of the Honolulu Woodturners Club is scheduled for Wednesday, May 14, at the Woodcraft store. The meeting will be from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the warehouse behind the Woodcraft retail store.
The program is not finalized, so details will be forth coming as they become available.
A note was read from Andy Cole, president elect. This included ideas for future programs and meeting. They included such things as identification and characteristics of local woods; selling experiences; pro and cons of consignment selling; representatives of galleries, and methods of finishing. If anyone has any specific ideas of interest, please pass them along.
A suggestion was made by Sharon Doughtie for an on-line bulletin board. Various things could be posted including timely notices such as the availability of wood. Several ideas were contributed including a question and answer section. Sharon will investigate what is involved in getting a bulletin board set up.
It was suggested at our January meeting that our members start wearing name tags at our meetings. It would be nice if each member could make your own name tag out of wood. Larry and Doug came with hand-made name tags. Certainly a handmade wooden name tag would be nicer than a hand-written tag pasted on your chest.
Several long-time local woodturners stopped by to say 'hello'. They were Ron Kent, Pat Kramer, and Sharon Doughtie.
