Honolulu Woodturners A Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners Minutes of May 10, 2005
The May meeting of the Honolulu Woodturners was brought to order by President Ed Potter at 6:00 p.m.
Ed made an announcement about the 2005 Symposium of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) to be held July 22-24 at Overland Park, Kansas. Highlights include three days of demonstrations by international, national, and regional recognized turners, an instant gallery, and the annual AAW banquet and auction. In order for AAW chapters to acquire quality lathes at very reasonable prices the AAW has worked out an agreement to allow for chapters to purchase JET and Powermatic lathes. Ed suggested this may be a good way for members to acquire the use of a lathe by splitting the cost with the club. In return for storage, the individual would have use of the lathe when not needed for club demonstrations and activities. There are several different sizes available and the consensus seemed to be it would be best if the club pursued several mini lathes. Sharon Doughtie has been in contact with Laurie Baron of Nohea Gallery about our club entering pieces for Second Annual Woodturning Show. The show is scheduled to open June 18 and is a benefit to Aloha United Way. The pieces will go to Nohea Gallery on consignment. Laurie will donate 15 per cent of her profits from the sale to the Aloha United Way. What is not sold by the show's end may be left there for sale or picked up. To help promote the show, there will be a turning demonstration in front of Nohea Gallery at Ward Warehouse on Saturday, June 18. Last year, Pat Kramer and Sharon turned spinning tops for the keiki. The children were invited to come up and color the top, and then they were given the top. This is an excellent way to showcase the woodturning community's work and to make some sales. Additional information will be sent out as it becomes available.

Paul Reich, a turner from Alberta, Canada, visited the islands in March. Several members volunteered to spend some time with Paul. Paul donated a piece of aromatic cedar to the club. The cedar was awarded as a prize to the challenge winners.
The club has been offered the opportunity to select wood from trees that are being removed from Schofield Barracks. Details are being worked out and additional information will be sent as it becomes available.
Woodcraft is sponsoring Hawaii's First Wood and Tool Show May 14 and 15. The show is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Everything in the store is 10% off plus other in-store specials. David Chung and Ed asked for volunteers to help out with turning demonstrations and manpower.
Stewart Chow gave an update on his efforts to secure outside demonstrators for the club.

Stewart is trying to coordinate a demonstration with Mike Lee and Betty Scarpino is tentatively scheduled for November 4 and 5. Betty's website is www.bettyscarpino.com
Stewart is currently working to secure visiting turners for next year. He is working out details to have Ernie Newman and David Ellsworth demonstrate in 2006.

Sandy Rhines, treasurer, reported the club has a balance of $4,407.22 in the treasury.
Available for sale at the meeting were T-shirts and caps embroidered with the club logo. They sell for $12.50 each. Contact Andy Cole at 739-1050 or andy_cole@honoluluwoodturners.org to check on availability, reserve, or purchase any of them.
Cathy Berenberg's son is an aide for Mayor Mufi Hannemann. Cathy notified us that the mayor's office is looking for a woodworker to make wooden 'keys to the city'. They want a skeleton-type key made from a local wood that is a couple of feet long. The key needs be carved or engraved with the seal of the city. The mayor's office can provide a jpeg of the seal and several trophy shops can do laser engraving. They are willing to pay $100 to $200 per key and initial request is for 25 keys. Aaron Hammer has generously offered club members some milo logs. Call Aaron at 293-8284 to make arrangements to get the wood.
Andy Cole also brought in a several pieces of wood and offered to anyone who wanted.
The program was presented by Craig Mason. Craig demonstrated the making of a stool using the style and techniques of Bonnie Klein. He showed how to make duplicate parts such as the legs and stretchers. This was an excellent and interesting demonstration of spindle work incorporating plenty of beads and coves. Craig also generously put together a couple of kits which included some directions and wood to make the style stool he demonstrated. He donated the kits for prizes. One was monkeypod and the other Norfolk Pine.
In an attempt to encourage more participation, multiple prizes are being awarded at the meeting for the challenges. Each meeting a participation prize winner will be drawn from the people who enter a piece in either of the challenges or in the instant gallery. Prizes will also be awarded to the top winners in the challenges.
Tom Young was the lucky winner of the participation prize.

Certificates for the winners of the challenges were created and presented by Bill Ichinose.
The challenge for July will again have two categories. You are encouraged to enter both. One category is to turn a piece of furniture and the other is to turn a piece of burl.
The May meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 12, 6:00 p.m., at the Woodcraft warehouse. The meetings are the second Tuesday of the odd months.
