Minutes of May 11, 2004

 

The meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m. by President Andy Cole.

 

New member present was Nathan Kapule.

 

Andy requested each member wear a name tag at the meeting. It helps us all, particularly the newer members. You are encouraged to make your own or Andy will supply blank paste-on tags upon which to write your name.

 

Mike Johansen offered to have tee shirts printed for us with our club logo on it. That sounds like a great idea, except, we do not have a logo. It was suggested that club members come up with some designs. Bring your entries to the July 13 meeting.

 

The Honolulu Woodturners is a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW). Members are encouraged to join the parent organization. The yearly fee is $35, most of which is applied to the subscription of ‘American Woodturner’ magazine. The association’s web site is: www.woodturner.org

 

Andy Cole announced he is going to the AAW’s 19^th Annual Symposium in Orlando, Fla. The dates are July 23 - 25. Anyone interested in going, contact Andy at andy_cole@honoluluwoodturners.org or 739-1050.

 

There are two demonstrations scheduled in the next couple of months. A flyer with information on Rolly Munro was sent out May 5. A flyer on Kip will be sent out shortly.

We are working to set up a ‘hands-on’ session with Rolly Munro on Sunday, May 30. Additional information will be sent as it becomes available.

Sharon Doughtie has been in contact with Laurie Baron of Nohea Gallery about our club entering pieces in a wood turning show opening June 18.

 

Laurie is looking for 20 to 40 turned pieces. The pieces will go to Nohea Gallery on consignment. Sharon is looking for a consignment agreement. If you need a copy, let me know and I will forward to you.

 

Laurie will donate 15 per cent of her profits from the sale to the Aloha United Way. On a strictly voluntary basis, people can donate 5 or 10 percent of their end of the sale to our club treasury.

 

Do not deliver pieces to the store. The pieces are due at Nohea’s warehouse by June 7. The warehouse is in the complex of warehouses across from Ward Warehouse. It is Building 4, the last one, most mauka. Their door faces mauka. There is no sign, but it’s the third or fourth from the end of the Diamond Head side. The door is blue with a large bell. Someone is generally at the warehouse from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

 

Make sure you have an invoice filled out for your pieces. The information should include your name, address, phone number, name and description of pieces, and wholesale price. Wholesale is half of retail. Make a notation as to who Nohea should make the check payable to.

 

To help promote the show, there will be a turning demo in front of Nohea Gallery at Ward Warehouse on Saturday, June 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sharon and Pat Kramer will bring supplies and set up a lathe to make spinning tops for the keiki. The children will be invited to come up and color the top, and then they will receive the top. We need another turner to volunteer for this. Ed Potter has volunteered to have the next ‘open shop’. Ed lives in the Makakilo/Kapolei area. The ‘open shop’ is scheduled for Saturday, June 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a BBQ following the ‘open shop’. Ed needs to know the number of folks planning on staying for the BBQ by Monday, June 7. Ed can be contacted at ed_potter@honoluluwoodturners.org or 672-6947. More info will be sent out later.

 

The program was given by Pete Meredith. Pete works for one of the major cabinet builders and has been in the finishing business since 1978. Pete explained there are basically two types of finishes; penetrating and surface. For bowls, Pete typically would apply three coats using a combination of both. First a coat of penetrating oil, followed by a surface coat of vinyl sealer, then a final coat of conversion varnish. Pete brought in examples of his finishes on various woods.

 

There is a ‘wood alert’ of mango still available. Some pieces are quite large and some have been cut into smaller sizes. The wood is in Palolo Valley. Call Tom Eisen at 392-8559 for more information.  

Dennis Feinberg has begun working with someone to develop a club website. The site will contain club information such as meeting information, minutes, and membership info as well as advice/tips/articles sections.

 

There will also be a gallery section. There was discussion regarding the quality of pictures for both the website and print. In order to take the best quality photographs, we need to work in a controlled environment. David Chung volunteered to take photographs. However, to control the lighting and shadows, pieces will need to be taken to his home in Kaneohe. We need photographs to build the web page so consider pieces you would like photographed. I would also like to try my hand at meeting the standards necessary for quality photographs.

The lucky winner for entering a piece in either the challenge, or the instant gallery, was Ralph Goto. He received a $25 gift certificate to the Woodcraft store.

 

We had a drawing for the hollow form Don Derry made during his demonstration. The winner was Rob Hale.

 

The July meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 13. The meetings are scheduled for the second Tuesday of the odd months and are held at the Woodcraft Store’s warehouse. Starting time is 6:00 p.m.

 

The challenge for the July meeting is to turn a bug or insect.
