November

Honolulu Woodturners

A Chapter of the

American Association of Woodturners

Minutes of November 14, 2006 Meeting

The November meeting of the Honolulu Woodturners was brought to order by President Ralph Goto at Windward Community College.

Ralph introduced the board. We had a lot of first-time visitors at the meeting and Ralph issued a welcome to everyone and asked each present to introduce themselves. Visitors included Roy Tsumoto, Mike Souza, Cliff Rawlins, Lloyd Faulkner, Edward and Alina Niemi, George Wong, Bill Lech, Greg and Brad Eaves, and Barry Wheeler.

Ralph explained we were holding the meeting at the Windward Community College so that members could view the facilities. There is a possibility we may hold meetings there or possibly use the facilities for outside demonstrators. Ralph expressed our appreciation for Woodcraft's generosity and cooperation in letting us hold the meetings at the Woodcraft site.

The minutes of the September 12, 2006, meeting were accepted as sent in the e-mail.

Ralph reported the club has purchased a Powermatic 3520 lathe for use in programs and demonstrations. This is the lathe we used at the Woodcraft Vendor Show demonstration and Woodcraft gave us a generous discount on the purchase price. Currently the lathe is being stored at Woodcraft's warehouse.

Dennis Feinberg was the grand prize winner at the Woodcraft Vendor Show. His prize was tools including a table saw, jointer, and planer.

President-Elect Gordon Tang asked folks to make and wear nametags for the coming year. This makes things easier for everyone, particularly the visitors and newcomers.

Sandy Rhines gave the treasurer's report: The club treasury balance as of November 14, 2006 was $2130.47.

Dues for the 2007 year are now being accepted. Yearly dues are $25. Sandy asked that dues be mailed to her. Sandy passed around a membership application form to those present. If you did not receive a form, mail your dues including name, address, city, zip, contact numbers and e-mail address to:

Tom Young gave a report on the club's website. He said that 20 members now have sections in the gallery and would like to have additional members submit photos. Contact Tom at  tom_young@honoluluwoodturners.org  for more information on what is needed. Tom is willing to take the photos for those so desiring. Also he is looking for folks to submit articles for the Tips and Techniques section. The URL is www.honoluluwoodturners.org

Ralph called for nominations for the 2007 club officers. According to club by-laws, the Vice President is the President-Elect for the following year. The new board:

The Program and Challenge committees need to be populated. Rob Hale has agreed to again chair the Challenge Committee as long as last year's members continue to lend a hand. The Program Committee is in need of new blood. Andy Cole has agreed to mentor any volunteers. Please contact Andy at andy_cole@honoluluwoodturners.org or Gordon Tang at gordon_tang@honoluluwoodturners.org  to help. For the club to be a success, we need volunteers to contribute to these positions.

We are also looking for an audio/visual coordinator. Thanks to Stewart Chow, the club has video equipment, but need someone to operate the camera for the demonstrations. Pat Kramer is willing to help someone get started. Experience is not a prerequisite as we have no one manning the equipment now. None of us were born expert turners and none of us were born expert camera operators. This is a learn-as-you-go, on-the-job training experience. We have brought in well known demonstrators and have a wealth of quality turners in our club it is a shame not to record their demonstrations for posterity. Please contact Gordon at gordon_tang@honoluluwoodturners.org  and give it a try.

Pat Kramer suggested a lot of our existing VHS tapes in the library will likely soon be obsolete. Sandy Rhines said she has the capability to transfer the VHS tapes to DVD.

Congratulations were offered to Nick Tomihama. Nick won the Ron Kent Award for most promising young artist at the recent Hawaii Forestry Industry Wood Show.

Mahalo to Dean Mailheau for bringing in to share some dense carpet padding. The padding is ideal for making your own sanding pads. Dean said he still has some at home so if interested, contact him at dean_mailheau@honoluluwoodturners.org

Gordon Tang presented a program on his method of making pewa or butterfly patches to fix a crack in a bowl. He feels that by putting in butterfly patches, it demonstrates the artist has addressed the problem and greatly enhances the value of the bowl. He uses a system developed by Mark Stebbins of the Big Island. Mark uses a laser to cut templates and butterflies of various sizes. The process looked pretty simple with the available templates and butterfly patches from Mark Stebbins. Mark's website is www.stebbinsstudios.com The URL for the butterfly page is

Gordon also recommended sanding buffer pads from a company called Abrasive Sanding and Polishing. Their website is www.abrasivesASAP.com  Go to Wood Turning, then Catalog to see what is available.

T-shirts, polo shirts, and caps with the club logo were offered for sale at the meeting. Pick one up at the next meeting or contact Andy Cole at andy_cole@honoluluwoodturners.org  to purchase.

Herb Kaneko brought in wood and various supplies including a sharpening jig to share. Andy Cole, Dougie Bowers, and David Higa also brought wood to share.
