The program was a discussion between Andy Cole and Ed Potter on the best way to cut and orient an odd-shaped piece of wood to take advantage of its character.

 

The next item was the 'Novice Corner' where folks are encouraged to ask questions. There were questions and discussion on the best way to turn deep forms and the use of CA glue to fill cracks and checking.

 

There is a wealth of information on the internet.

The September meeting of the Honolulu Woodturners was called to order by President David Chung.

 

David issued a welcome to those present and asked visitors to introduce themselves. Visitors included Robert Weeks, John Chock, Peter Marsh, Roger Hirlinger, Mike Lewis, and Leroy Sakaguchi from Kauai. Robert Weeks became a new member.

 

David asked that folks make and wear a name tag.

 

The Honolulu Woodturners is a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW). David encouraged folks to join the AAW. Their website is www.woodturner.org/  David talked about the publication and the annual symposium. This year the symposium was held in Richmond, Virginia. Next year the symposium is scheduled for Albuquerque, New Mexico. There have been some preliminary discussions about forming a new AAW chapter on Kauai.

 

Malcolm Tibbetts, a well known segmented turner, is considering forming an AAW splinter group dedicated to segmented turning. If you have any interest in belonging to such a group, contact David at david_chung@honoluluwoodturners.org

 

David mentioned two websites dedicated to wood turners. WoodCentral is a discussion group which includes photos and World of Woodturners (WoW) is primarily a photo gallery of turnings. WoodCentral's website can be found at

Andy Cole gave the treasury report. The current balance is $5,820.16.

 

The club's website is  www.honoluluwoodturners.org/  There is an open invitation for those who do not have a section in the gallery to have one added or to upgrade existing photos in the gallery. The Hawaii State Art Museum (HISAM) invited the Honolulu Woodturners to put on a turning demonstration for HISAM's Second Saturday event on August 9th. Demonstrators included David Chung, Tim Freeman, Andy Cole, Craig Mason, Ken Nielsen, and Stan Hebda. HISAM presented the club with a $100 honorarium for the day. The executive committee decided to give the $100 to Andy Cole in appreciation for all he does for the club.

 

David gave a report on the Phil Brennion benefit being held at Nohea Gallery in Ward Warehouse. At least five pieces have been sold and the proceeds have netted $765 for Phil's account. Phil's story can be found at www.woodturner.org/news/PhilBrennion.pdf

 

John Jordan requested his demonstration and 'hands-on' class scheduled for September 13 and 14 be postponed.

 

The club is purchasing a 55 gallon drum of Anchorseal green wood and end grain sealer. Mike Chu has graciously let us store the drum at his warehouse. The sealer will be sold to members at the regularly scheduled meeting for $15 per gallon. Bring your own container.

 

Election of officers for 2009 will be held at the November meeting. Tim Freeman, as vice president, is the president for 2009. Offices needing to be filled are vice president, treasurer, and secretary. Sharon has asked to be relieved of her responsibilities as demonstration coordinator. Sharon is continuing to try and coordinate a demonstration with Jacques Vessery and John Jordan. David will contact Israeli Eli Avisera about doing a demonstration.

 

Woodcraft's 2008 Hawaii Woodworking Show will be held September 20 and 21. The club has been involved for the past several years doing demonstrations during the show. The club plans to man three lathes during the show. The club Powermatic, a Jet Mini and a Rikon Mini need to be manned. The minis can be used for either pen or bowl turning. There are still some empty slots, so please contact Andy at andy_cole@honoluluwoodturners.org if you can help.

 

Opening night of Nohea Gallery's Fifth Annual Woodturning Show will be held Friday, November 7. It will include an artist's reception party. A turning demonstration is planned for Saturday, November 8.  This year, the show has been moved closer to the holiday season with the hope of increased sales. This is a great opportunity for club members to place their pieces in a fine art gallery. There is no entry fee, you may make some sales, and it promotes the local woodturning community. Additional information will be sent out as it becomes available.

 

The Hawaii Forest Industry Association (HFIA) will hold their sixteenth annual show Thursday, November 20, through Sunday, November 23, at Honolulu Convention Center.

 

Hawaii's Craftsmen Annual Juried Exhibition will be held October 11 through 31 at the Honolulu Academy Art Center at Linekona. Visit http://www.hawaiicraftsmen.org/ for additional information.

 

Each year at the AAW Symposium, there is a chapter collaborative show. The first year Honolulu Woodturners entered a piece we won first place. This year, we again attempted to enter a piece, but due to lack of participation, we had to cancel our efforts. Ed Potter suggested that if we want to participate, we need to begin early. If you would like to coordinate the effort, contact David at david_chung@honoluluwoodturners.org

 

David reminded folks, that to encourage participation, the club offers a participation prize to an individual who enters a piece into either the challenge or the instant gallery. However, to be eligible, you must sign the participation sheet.

 

Craig Mason was the lucky winner of the September Participation Prize.

 

There were two challenges for this meeting. One was to make a nested set of bowls and the other was to make a bowl form with a minimum of one-half inch thick walls.
