The July meeting of the Honolulu Woodturners was called to order by President David Chung.

David issued a welcome to those present and asked visitors to introduce themselves. Visitors were Ralph Kam, Jim and Dee Lawrence, and John Dekle.

The Honolulu Woodturners is a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW). David encouraged folks to join the AAW. Their website is www.woodturner.org/  David talked about the publication and the annual symposium. This year the symposium was held in Richmond, Virginia. Next year the symposium is scheduled for Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Pat Kramer and Sharon Doughtie will have an exhibition at the Beatrice Wood Center September 6 through October 26 in Ojai, California. The website is www.beatricewood.com/

Andy Cole gave the treasury report. Currently, the club has 77 members and a balance of $5,790.56 in the treasury.

The club's website is www.honoluluwoodturners.org   There is an open invitation for those who do not have a section in the gallery to have one added or to upgrade existing photos in the gallery. Send your photos to Tom Young at tom_young@honoluluwoodturners.org Tom is also willing to take the photos for you.

Ben and Cristi Richards have volunteered to be mentors for club members interested in learning about pen turning. Contact Ben and Cristi at ben_richards@honoluluwoodturners.org

Carl Sherry informed the club about a company called Treeworkx in New Zealand offering Astra Dot abrasive at a 10% discount to club members. The URL for their website is www.treeworkx.co.nz/

David gave a report on the Phil Brennion benefit being held at Nohea Gallery in Ward Warehouse. As of July 8, four pieces have been sold which has netted $393 to Phil Brennioon's account. Mahalo to Stewart Chow, Andy Cole, Mike Mahoney, Craig Mason, Ed Niemi, Larry Rodrigues, Tom Young, and Mike Lee for donating pieces. David posted a notice on one of the woodturning forums and received donated pieces from Steve Antonnuci of New Jersey and Pete Kekel of Kentucky. Phil's story can be found at www.woodturner.org/news/PhilBrennion.pdf

David mentioned that there is a wealth of information on the internet including a discussion forum at WoodCentral. The URL is www.woodcentral.com/  Another website is World of Woodturners. You must be a member to access this site, but membership is free and you must be invited to join. If interested, contact

David at david_chung@honoluluwoodturners.org  or

Matt Takata at matt_takata@honoluluwoodturners.org or

Tom Young at tom_young@honoluluwoodturners.org to receive an invitation.

Ken Nielsen attended the Utah Woodturning Symposium in Orem, Utah. This is the oldest wood turning show in the country and Ken thinks this is a wonderful experience.

Andy Cole and Jim Bannister attended the AAW symposium in Richmond, Virginia. This is the largest wood turning show. Jim enjoys the 'how to' sessions while Andy has gravitated toward the panel discussions. Both have volunteered to help 'behind the scenes' at the show.

Opening night of Nohea Gallery's Fifth Annual Woodturning Show will be held November 7. It will include an artist's reception party. A turning demonstration is tentatively planned for Saturday. This is a great opportunity for club members to place their pieces in a fine art gallery. There is no entry fee, you may make some sales, and it promotes the local woodturning community. Additional information will be sent out as it becomes available.

The Hawaii Forest Industry Association (HFIA) will hold their sixteenth annual show Thursday, November 20, through Sunday, November 23, at Honolulu Convention Center.

David reminded folks, that to encourage participation, the club offers a participation prize to an individual who enters a piece into either the challenge or the instant gallery. However, to be eligible, you must sign the participation sheet.

Craig Swedburg was the lucky winner of the meeting’s Participation Prize. He received a bowl coring system.

The John Jordan demonstration and 'hands-on' class is scheduled for September 13 and 14. John is an acclaimed turner from Tennessee. He is known primarily for his textured and carved hollow vessels. The cost is $50 for the demonstration and $100 for the hands-on. Additional information will be sent out soon.

Woodcraft's 2008 Hawaii Woodworking Show will be held September 20 and 21. The club has been involved for the past several years doing demonstrations during the show. Last year the club had three turning demonstrations going on simultaneously. More information and a sign-up sheet for turning will be sent out later.
