The May meeting of the Honolulu Woodturners was called to order by President David Chung.

David issued a welcome to those present and asked visitors to introduce themselves. Keith Maile said he was just getting into turning and joined the club at the meeting. Another new member present was John Frigillana. Visitors included Lloyd Shomo from Oregon and local visitors Rick Hauk, Tony Baideme and Bob.

David asked that folks make and wear a name tag. We have a considerable number of new members and knowing a person's name encourages interaction with other members.

David reminded folks, that to encourage participation, the club offers a participation prize to an individual who enters a piece into either the challenge or the instant gallery. However, to be eligible, you must sign the participation sheet.

David encouraged members to join the American Association of Woodturners (AAW), our parent organization. The AAW distributes a high quality quarterly magazine. They also put on an annual symposium at various cities across the country. To learn more about AAW, visit their website at www.woodturner.org/

Our treasurer, Andy Cole, has blemished his attendance record. This meeting was the first he has missed since joining the club in 2000. His son Ben has been accepted to the Dodge Film School at Chapman University and there is a college informational meeting for parents that Andy and Sharon are attending. David read the treasurer's report for Andy. We nearly broke even on the Marilyn Campbell demonstration and hands-on coming out $56.17 in the red. The balance in the treasury as of May 13, 2008 is $5,705.16.

The club's website is www.honoluluwoodturners.org  There is an open invitation for those who do not have a section in the gallery to have one added or to upgrade existing photos in the gallery. Send your photos to Tom Young at tom_young@honoluluwoodturners.org  Tom is also willing to take the photos for you.

Leroy, of Woodcraft, has been very generous in helping the Honolulu Woodturners over the years. Initially, Leroy offered the club space at his store to hold our meetings and has been supportive as we have grown. As a token of our appreciation, the club presented Leroy the narra platter turned by Mike Mahoney.  A laser engraved koa plaque thanking Leroy and a gift certificate to Macaroni Grill was also included.

Dean Mailheau coordinated a wood harvest at Schofield Barracks April 15. Included in the haul was the very popular pheasant wood and interestingly named wood, China Doll. Dean said he expects the harvest to continue occasionally for the next few years.

Dean has also taken over responsibility as club librarian. The information in the library is available to be checked out at the meetings. To see what is available, visit the club website at www.honoluluwoodturners.org/index_files/library.htm

Members of the club were invited to again participate in the Iolani Art Show April 18 and 19. Several members sold pieces but it appeared sales were not as brisk as in other years.

The club put on turning demonstrations and displayed turning of various kinds of local woods at The Malama O Manoa 1000 Tree Giveaway April 20.

Mike Chu talked about his experiences at the Marilyn Campbell demonstration and hands-on. He felt he gained a lot during the hands-on and that it was well worth while. Kraig Smith shared a platter he made using Marilyn's inlay techniques. Kraig used purpleheart wood for the leaves and the black outline is epoxy.

The club is fortunate and appreciative of the work Sharon Doughtie puts into coordinating and bringing in these outside demonstrators. John Jordan, a well known turner from Tennessee will be in the islands September 13 and 14 to give us a demonstration and hold a hands-on class. John was one of the founders of the AAW and is known for his spiral and fluted hollow forms.

David is coordinating a benefit fundraiser for Phil Brennion. Phil is a former AAW President and an inspiration to many in the woodturning world. As a result of an ill-fated chiropractic procedure Phil is now a quadriplegic. Phil's story can be found on the AAW website at www.woodturner.org/news/PhilBrennion.pdf  David is asking members to donate a piece for the benefit. Nohea Gallery has agreed to set up an area in

their Ward Warehouse location to display and sell the pieces. Nohea will send our share of the sale directly to Phil to help with his medical expenses. An e-mail will be distributed as the details become finalized. If you would like to contribute a piece, send an e-mail to David at david_chung@honoluluwoodturners.org  The club will be donating one of the pieces turned by Mike Mahoney during his recent visit.

David brought to the club's attention a couple of symposia scheduled for this summer. The Utah Woodturning Symposium is scheduled for May 22 - 24 at Utah Valley State College in Orem, Utah. Their website is www.utahwoodturning.com/

The AAW Symposium will be held June 20, 21, 22, at the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond, Virginia. Additional information is available at

www.woodturner.org/sym/sym2008/

Woodcraft annual woodworking show will be held September 20 and 21. The last several years the club has put on turning demonstrations at the show. Mark your calendars as Andy Cole will be coordinating the demonstrations and asking for volunteers to fill the time slots.

Opening night of Nohea Gallery's Fifth Annual woodturning show is scheduled for November 7. The show is an opportunity for club members to display and sell their turnings. It is also a fundraiser for Aloha United Way. Details of the show are still to be determined. Previously, we have had an artist reception and turning demonstration on opening night.

The AAW Chapter Collaborative effort has been cancelled due to not enough participation. This is unfortunate as last year our creation won first place in the artistic category.

Dave Howard was the meeting's recipient of the participation prize. The participation prize is given each meeting to someone who has entered a piece into the challenge or brought a piece to share in the instant gallery.
