Please send me an e-mail and indicate if you want to attend and if you intend to bring a guest. We need this information to figure out how much meat to buy. It might also be helpful to know if you plan to take advantage of hands-on time and which station. Please
e-mail your response to Tom at tom_young@honoluluwoodturners.org |

|
| What: |
A day of making pens and coring sets with the McNaughton system. |
| |
|
| Purpose: |
The primary purpose of the Pen to Sets Fest is to just get to know each other better, talk story, exchange ideas, ask questions, improve our techniques, pick up some tips, to just have some fun, and to give hands-on time for those who want hands-on time with pen making and bowl blank coring.
|
| |
|
| Pens: |
The club has purchased 25 SlimLine pen kits and will provide curly koa pen blanks for those wishing to try pen turning. If you would like to try another type of pen, please bring your own kit and wood.
We will have three or four small lathes for the pen turning with mentors available for hands-on help and assistance. The pen section will be led by Stan Hebda. There will be tools available to use. |
| |
|
| Sets: |
The set coring workshop using the Kel McNaughton system will be led by Andy Cole on a Powermatic 3520 lathe. A Jet 1642 lathe will also be available for blank modifications prior to and after the coring work is complete. |
| |
|
| |
Turners bringing wood for the coring workshop should have the outside of the bowl shaped prior to stepping up to the Powermatic for hands on help. The ideal shape is hemispherical (basic rice bowl). all shapes, and shapes that taper back in are more difficult to core. |
| |
|
| |
Tenon size: Bigger is better. Minimum tenon diameter should be at least 5”, and about half the diameter of the bowl. (A 14” diameter bowl should have a 7” tenon). The tenon should be roughly 3/8” to 7/16” in height, and either straight or dovetail will work. We can modify slightly prior to chucking. |
| |
|
| |
Wood type: It is highly recommended that only fairly green wood be brought for coring. Wood that has aged some can be cored, but with greater difficulty. Either natural edge or flat top surfaces are OK. It is recommended that bowl blanks with rough bark be well saturated with very thin CA glue prior to coring. That is about the only way to insure that the bark stays on. |
| |
|
| Food: |
Fred Humphrey will be setting up his barbecue grill for lunch. The club will purchase steak and chicken to grill. |
| |
|
| |
Bring your own drinks, a side dish with a serving utensil, and a chair. Dennis Feinberg will bring exotic beer from Kauai to share. |
| |
|
| |
Note on Potluck: All side dishes are true potluck. Suggestions include something else to grill, rice, noodles, salad, vegetables, dessert, etc. Hopefully not everyone brings rice. |
| |
|
| |
Tom Young will be providing the paper goods and eating utensils. |
